I ahte writing that title.. Because it's not my FINAL post in a sense of the word-- it may be for my final for edm 310 though--- anyway.
I loved loved this class! It was a bit overwhelming to begin with-- but I like that. I found lots of things beneficial-- I now am going to get a MAC! yay for me. I saw how great they are in this class. I also love google docs which is pretty lame to say that I liked it the most but... well you know me-- lame. Haa. I've shared this with EVERYONE. I'm also glad I was introduced to the world of blogging!
One thing I would not change but improve on... Assignments. Need a list of assignments with instructions as a document by itself. this should includ instructions on each and the due date. That way we can work on anything ahead of time and know exactly what to do. This would have cut down on my confusion A LOT.
Alright, well goodbye EDM 310 classmates and Dr. Strange for now-- hope to still hear from you- luv u guys :)

Post for April 25
Sorry guys had a debilitating retinal migraine last night and couldn't read the computer screen sooo... I'm writing this morning with "new eyes" HAHA.
OH MY! what a great PLN. I didn't even have a computer or much access to one in the 7th grade. We were still only playing Oregon trail in computer lab at the library. I wonder if i can find that somewhere... even my six year old would say "this game is sooo sloooow". I've just this year learned what "PLN" even means (Personal learning Network). I'm so happy that my daughter will have so many more opportunities for learning and to excel than we did i can't wait to be able to show her everything I've learned. Although, I'm sure she will be teaching me when the time comes.
2 Questions:
1: My sentence: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". I say that to Annabelle all the time, but... I also say it in my head to myself a lot too... because I have a tendency to say things I probably shouldn't about people. I usually say out loud exactly what I'm thinking.. which is NOT a good quality. So, I'm working on it. I've heard this sentence my whole life, the first time was when I watched Bambi. Thumper says this when he only wants to eat the blossoms and not the greens. Which is kind of like people are today. You only want to focus on the good things and point out the bad. When I watched this again with my little girl about three years ago, we began saying it. So, now I try to remind myself of this. Believe me it's hard when you are as opinionated as myself.
2: Am I better today than I was yesterday?
Duh. I know more, I've learned more, I've experienced more. Yes of course I am better today than yesterday-

Project #8- Teach someone using Technology
Okay so my mother has discovered a whole new world... Facebook- haha. I have taught her how to upload pics of Annabelle ( my daughter ), and how to look up people on Facebook, and to chat. She keeps in touch with all her sisters in new jersey, Arkansas, and Mississippi. My mother didn't even know how to turn ON the computer when we started this little project of gathering friends and social networking. She can now boot up the computer, log in, connect to the internet, use her "new" email account on gmail--- I'm copying your strategy Dr. Strange :) She also types the church bulletin--- and has found Google docs to be a great thing to use for it. She types a draft and sends a copy to the church staff and they add whatever they need and then she prints it out- easy as 1-2-3. She said she was scared and a little intimidated by the computer to begin with, but now she loves it! I'm going to give her my laptop and I'm getting a MAC!!! yay! She's excited and so am I... I should so get an A in this class because you talked me into getting a MAC Dr. Strange. :)
Project #6 -Report on Skype Use
Just saying...
I LOVE skype! So does the rest of my family... we don't live near anyone in our family so they rarely get to see my little girl, Annabelle. I taught my Uncle Brent how to use it- very simple. Now everyone goes to his house on Sunday nights and we skype in and the whole family can see Annabelle and how much she's grown... today she wiggled her tooth for them hahaha. I commented on Sesalina's blog this week. She had written creatively about their class playing a game with another class. She was very descriptive and wrote reaally good!
We were asked to blog about anything to do with our EDM310 class this week. I know this sounds very elementary, but my favorite thing I have learned is about GoogleDocs. My boyfriend now uses it at his office. I taught him how you can do a presentation, worksheet, spreadsheet, and a document--- He really liked it because you can email to other people with gmail and they can edit or make changes to it.
So this was what I've gotten the most use out of so far.

Dr. Seuss- The Zax
This week's assignment was to watch the "zax" video. I love Dr. Seuss! I haven't really watched any Seuss videos in years...but they all have hidden meaning-- you guys should check some additional ones out on youtube. Click HERE to view the video we were assigned to watch.
The two "zax" are really stubborn, and in some cases you should be. I'm open to change though as well. This video show that you are most likely missing out on something amazing by not "changing direction".

Great video- I loved hearing the children sing. I think posting and working online is an awesome idea. I'm so glad that I've learned so much about it this semester. Teachers can view it online and it also keeps you accountable.

I read Steven Anderson's blog for the last 3 weeks, he hasn't posted anything in a while. I went back and looked at some of the older posts on his page though. there is one entitled "Boolify Project". It's actually really neat. It's a search engine for teachers. You drag a puzzle piece to the center of the screen and type in what subject matter you're looking up, then it pulls up all the links for it. He has several other resources on his blog . Check it out!
ALEX:
I found ALEX very user friendly, and easy to navigate from one thing to another. It easily guides you to what you need to do. It has link for lesson plans and even details it down to subject and grade. Wow, this is so great. I will definitely be using this in my future teaching.
You create your own account and this allows you to set up your lesson plans for other teachers to view and critique. This site is also valuable because it allows you to keep up with continuing education opportunities. It's a great site where teachers can learn, find information, and help one another.

What a way to get ahead, I would have loved to have had this in my high school. I could have graduated early, started college early, various other things... Oh the possibilities.
I'm so glad the ball is finally rolling. I'm sure there are a few kinks to work out, but I'm just happy we're on the way. Yay! ( ok one more) !

College experience for me has been a mix of things... procrastination, partying ( 6 years ago that is), not studying, studying really hard, and enjoyment. My first two years I managed to make OK grades (B's and C's), but the last year since I've started back, I have managed to make all A's and two B's in the last 4 semesters.
I often find myself in classes though being bored because I don't know why I am listening to someone talk about something I will not use in my classroom... Such as a PE course. Ugh, hate those. I've had a few teachers who have rally inspired me and that I felt wanted me to learn why i was in their classroom and how I was going to need what they were teaching.

I was assigned a little girl named Jessica this week. The kids in her class at St. Pius X, are really involved in drama, singing, and production. They were so cute, and they even used american idol on their movie that they made and posted onto their blog. What fun-- I can't even make a movie yet.. Maybe I should ask them for some pointers... haha

Randy Pausch
Honestly, I thought this would be incredibly boring-but I wasn't. I was a little uplifted and inspired by it, thanks for this one Dr. Strange :) He talked about wanting to reach our goals. he talked about his goals, and how he set out to achieve them. He says that parents and the people we look up to are who actually get us there.
When you set a goal, work toward it, and succeed at it. You know you've reached the "grown-up" place. haha

I had a little girl to comment on this week named Diana D. She wrote a poem about a lost dog, it kind of made me sad. Well, it did make me sad. The poem was about a dog named Toby. My boyfriend lost a golden retriever named Toby about 3 years ago, and he is still sensitive about him. I'm extremely close to the Golden retriever we have now, his name is Tanner. I get teary eyed just thinking of him not being around...no none to greet me with a kiss at the door, no colar jingling down the hallway, no one following you everywhere or laying all over you on the sofa. I'm going to miss that, I'm going to miss him. He's nine years old, so he doesn't have too much longer, and I don't even want to think about it. He my very first pet. I've never been close to one and never lost one. I'm sad that I won't have him forever, but he has really made my life, the years that he has been in it.

Forgot about PLN post whoops
Didn't mean to have to make a seperate post for my PLN update but anyway, it will have to do.
I created my PLN using twitter. I got on Dr. Strange's twitter page and foloowed everyone who had anything to do with education.
I also got Beth Stiller's blog sight and am now following her 50 teachers that she supports. I'm still kind of wading through all of this, many have answered my tweets about educationa dn PLNs and given me there blog adresses to look at to get ideas and to read their different experiences.
What a wealth of information! I've got plenty of resources now, I hope everyone will foloow these teachers on my twitter account, they could be so helpful to you in your future teaching.

I will encourage my students to use the internet for research, what a time saver! I'm so ready for multi-media use to get up and going. I've been watching all these things that Dr. Strange posts on the blog and I'm so jealous of you Mac users! I wish I had one, I definitely will go with Mac next time I purchase a computer. It just seems to be so much more convenient.
Everything that Miller showed on his presentation was so inviting and new age, i really enjoyed what he had to say.

Connectivism. What a concept! Loved the presentation, never thought something so simple could explain something so compex as a PLN to me! haha well it's complex to me... stop laughing Dr. Strange.
I don't think this idea would be too great for middle or high schoolers, I think maybe if we eased them into it, I guess I'm still just a bit skeptical. I think college students could take advantage of it and would do well with the responsibility, but there's no one to hold the immature middle and high schoolers responsible if their parents aren't at home.
The video mentioned quite a few things that I've just recently learned of in our EDM310 class. I couldn't get over that I knew what he was talking about, Yay! Again.. stop laughing Dr. Strange. I'm just happy I'm becoming technologically literate.

This guy talks about us as a nation moving towards disengagement and fragmentation, which I somewhat agree with, but not whole-heartedly. I was a little weirded out by him though, he jumps around a lot and was hard to follow. I found myself listening more to the squeaking background noise than his monotone voice... oops. I think maybe if I had read it online instead of watching and listening I could have grasped it better.

I had a young guy named Alec who asked other bloggers their thoughts about "probowl"vs superbowl. Apparently people who play in the probowl ( which occurs before the superbowl) run the risk of injuring themselves, because they may be playing in the superbowl... I'm not into football. Sooo, my thoughts are: If you are playing in the superbowl... don't play in the "pro-bowl" boys.

I commented on Stephen Anderson's blog. This week he talked about kids asking questions and how annoying it is when they say they are never going to use what they learn. True. Here's the solution: Show them how they will use it! He states this in his blog--- I enjoyed reading it and I certainly remember thinking how boring some things were when I was in elementary , middle and high school... I wish my teachers would have been more motivated. Bummer.
Ewww, I would never want any one of my students to say that about me--- so here's to motivating anyone who's reading my blog about answering questions!

Alice Christie:
I really enjoyed Alice's photo section if her website. I am into photography and have a new found love for Picasa. Anyone know if photo-shop works as well or better than Picasa or is equivalent??? I like to edit pictures and play around with them. Exercising this can help you become technologically literate while you are having fun.
I am in a music class this semester. Our teacher made a comment that children like to have pages turned when you are reading a story to them... I had a thought. How about incorporating technology into this? Wouldn't it be exciting to them to have a book read to them and actually be able to SEE the pictures? HUGE pictures on a projector or a smart board, instead of trying to see a small book in the front of the classroom from your seat?
Another idea would be to let the class take photos with a digital camera, and allow them to do creative writing on them. Make up a story or poem and share with the class. They could even make a digital book (power point) with their photos to share with the class. What fun!
itunes U:
I am on board for anything to do with itunes u. I like it. This program could help middle, high school, and college students tremendously. It would be something to review if they were absent one day, also it would be great for review so you can catch anything you missed.
I checked a couple school that use itunes u. Stanford's web page for it is very impressive. It looks very polished, they offer courses, lectures, and some text. Check it out

Duke University's use of Ipods
Okay, so Duke distributed over 1600 Apple Ipod devices to entering students in 2004, to encourage creative uses of technology. OMG! Why doesn't our school do this? Are we really this afraid of change? People could walk around campus, ride in their cars and study without being a hazard to others. I see people walking around looking at notes all the time! They run into people and the potential for accidents is not good! Cars... hello!?? Also there is no way you could study notes and drive! I mean this is so obvious! ugh...

I like this WIKI because everyone has different ideas and you get to see them all. At some point someone is going to state something you hadn't thought of. I love it when that happens. You guys should definitely join this wiki.

This week I had a little girl named Paige to comment on for her class blog. Wow! She writes so well... I really couldn't believe it, in fifth grade. She practically writes as well a me, I'm serious! The class did two plays and she commented how she would have changed them and used more props and not have had the actors with their back to the audience, it seemed she knew a good but about drama and stage set-up. I commented on how ell she wrote and to keep up the great work and I was glad she had fun.You guys should definitely read her post, I mean really I was kind of shocked she wrote so well.

Hello!
Somehow i forgot to write a post about comments4kids on week 4! oops!
I really enjoyed listening to the little boy i had- His name was Night. What an awesome name! I told him good luck this year and I can't wait to hear more about his year:) This is so cool, I showed my daughter and she said she wanted her class to do this! Haha. How cute.

week 4 comments
WIKIPEDIA
WHAT?! Wikipedia...not reliable... hahaha. I thinks it is nice to be able to know who is changing the facts about themselves or their companies, you know "just so we know". It sounds to me like Wikipedia is going downhill on the "reliability roller coaster" fast at this point. I wouldn't trust them as a valid source right now...at least not until they get their facts straight.
WHAT I LEARNED THIS YEAR
This is so great. Children should definitely be able to express themselves and their little experiences. I know they may seem trivial to us sometimes, but it isn't to them. I have a five year old, where she sits at school or whether she got to be the "busy bee" for the teacher can make or break her week. So, I try to pay a lot of attention and plan on doing that in my classroom as well.

I commented on a teacher's blog, who had a sleepover at school. They skyped into several different locations and "traveled" around the world-- what a cool idea! I'd love to try this with my future class

Response to podcasts
I chose to watch the second choice on our list of sites with pod casts.Pod casting works with the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, allowing children to be innovative if they are making their own pod casts. It also promotes creativity. Pod casting is a form of learning that children today are familiar with and can relate to, therefore it may be more beneficial to them than traditional learning methods.
Pod casts also offer differentiation, children can listen to them as review and it allows them to gain a more in depth experience of the subject matter. It also enhances by offering new options. Such as children who are sick or absent from school for one reason or another. The students can listen to the teacher's daily lecture through podcast on their personal computer! Awesome! I wish I had that opportunity when I was in high school.

Posts for Jan 31- media literacy etc.
Miss Cassidy's 1st grade:
I love that she told the children to always say positive things! Also I like that she taught them how to be safe on the Internet. I think I should start working with my daughter on the computer so she can be ready for first grade! ha-ha. I hope that her school will offer as much opportunity to the students as Miss Cassidy's does. I am certain that i will take a proactive approach to this in my classroom. How inspiring!
PODCASTS
I really enjoyed the podcasts that had no background noise--- I can't deal with the static. I lose concentration and try to figure out whats going on with the people in the background, very annoying. Although, the speakers had some very good things to say, I couldn't wrap my mind around it for the dishes clanking and the drive-through lady!
I prefer to have a clear, no static, no echo podcast. I enjoyed the music intro on some of the pod casts, this kind of got me pumped up and excited to see what they were going to say. The ones that didn't have music, I wasn't as interested in at the beginning.
The drive through was the worst, besides the one in the Italian restaurant. He could have paused the recorder or muted it while he was talking to the girl, I don't care what he's eating or drinking and whether he is having Italian wedding soup or whole grain pasta and tomato! That has nothing to do with why I would be listening to his podcast. Throw me a bone here... that's wasting my time, not to mention I HATE the drive-through, especially when people are on cell phones, they take extra long. So, when he said at the beginning he was in the drive-through, I was predestined to bomb his podcast.
All in all, I like intro music and very clear, to the point, podcasts that don't waste my time with useless banter.

GARY HAYES-SOCIAL MEDIA COUNTS
These counts go up extremely fast! Faster than I could have ever imagined! You would never realize how much people are using the social media unless you saw this. My uncle is very Internet savvy and into blogs, face book, twitter, etc. I'm going to email him the link-- I think he would enjoy. These counts could prove that we may not need to be in classrooms for everything sooner than later. EVERTHING could be potentially web cast to the students in the class. I realize there are state laws about attendance- but our education and knowledge of the Internet is obviously growing at an alarming rate-- woo hoo! So, i would like to think that the state would conform.
You could be anywhere in the world and attend your class! Even on vacation-- teachers could pre-record their lectures and then have a dedicated time for questions and answers if students need help. What an amazing concept-- ahhh i can't wait for all of this to arrive.
MICHAEL WESCH- A VISION OF STUDENTS TODAY
My experiences are similar to the students' in this video. Aside from my class sizes and I'm pretty confident almost all my teachers know my name. I do on the other hand grow bored in class reading power points that a teacher has prepared online and just reads to the class- i would get so much more if she emailed these to us or made them available online with links to different websites or pod casts to show examples instead of stories from 20 years ago.
Also these could be followed online. I would love to be able to do most of my schoolwork online-- lots of money is spent on textbooks- that we probably could find the same information about online! Oh so depressing.
I have a 5 year old who is in school- so my school schedule is around hers. I would love to be able to take my laptop and do class assignments and watch lectures in my car while waiting for an hour in line to pick her up.
I call myself a multi-tasker, but i can think of so many other things i could add to it, if i had the technological capability. If Annabell is sick from school and I don't have a babysitter, I would like to know that I could log onto my class and it be the same as me being there in the flesh-- and i wouldn't miss out on anything.
We are very fortunate to have expensive computers and laptops... we should be utilizing them more to enrich our lives with foreign studies, lectures from credible sources, and for convenience.... instead of "face booking through class".
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY- KELLY HINES
Teachers should totally be self-motivated. If you're not an independent-minded, get things done-type, who wants to offer the best to the people around them... well then maybe this career path isn't for you.
Learning should be done in a variety of ways and technology offers millions!!! Like they say.. everyone learns differently. I know that's true for me. I even learn different subjects different ways. If you achieve "learning" in your classroom you are being productive! Oh my, what words... I LOVE that comment.
The misuse of technology in schools is discouraging, but yet encouraging in the same way. It makes me want to squeeze every drop of opportunity out of the technology that's offered to our students! This opens children up to new ways of learning, new experiences, and new strategies for teachers.
It's definitely NOT about the technology, it's about us! Each teacher embracing the ideas of the 21st century and all it has to offer. We should always keep the concept of "learning" at the front of our mind. We are educating the future governments, the future Presidents, and the future educators of OUR own children's children--- we are educating and preparing them for the future- for our future. Isn't that worth something to you?
FISCH:IS IT OKAY TO BE A TECHNOLOGICALLY ILLITERATE TEACHER
I absolutely love this guy. He's very forward and outspoken--- i don't think he should ever edit out anything he has to say. I enjoyed every word of it and found it to be motivating. I liked the list that the other guy wrote as well... I totally agree. We are not only depriving ourselves but our students of what technology has to offer.

Vicky Davis
This movie was very inspiring. Vicky is the kind of teacher i hope my child has. She seems very encouraging and open to any way of learning that helps the child to grasp the concept she is teaching. We should try to evaluate each students strengths and weaknesses and offer different alternatives for learning that would be beneficial to them. Allow the children to elaborate on their learning by exploring it themselves. Instead of choosing to instruct all the children o do the same thing the same way every time. You can connect to the world and learn different things you would have never known just by collaborating with other students across the world. Maybe find out what works for them and try that. Computers are such a wonderful tool to have and I think Vicky really shows how beneficial they are with the work she does in her classroom.
